COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, NOVEMBER 9, 2016 -- Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state health department filed a lawsuit against the City of Colorado Springs over water quality and stormwater violations from as far back as 2009.
The Colorado Springs Gazette is reporting that civil penalties for mismanagement of stormwater programs from 2011 to 2014 could number in the millions.
An EPA audit from 2013 showed that at least two developments released untreated stormwater into state water bodies, and other failures to protect water quality led to the suit.
Mayor John Suthers has implemented a $460 plan to fix violations of the past since he took office in 2015. In a statement, the mayor said he is working on improvements to the city's stormwater programs, and expressed frustration over the decision to file legal action now.
