THE WOODLANDS, Texas, March 28, 2003 -- Chicago Bridge & Iron Company N.V. announced that its subsidiary CB&I Constructors, Inc. has been awarded a contract by Atlantic Skanska, Inc. to engineer and construct an anaerobic Egg-Shaped Digester (ESD) facility in Buford, Georgia, USA for the Gwinnett County Department of Public Utilities.
When completed the ESD facility will handle all of the waste biological solids that the F. Wayne Hill Water Resources Center generates during its full tertiary treatment process. The consulting engineering team for the project consists of Jordan, Jones & Goulding, Inc.; CH2M Hill; and Precision Planning, Inc.
CB&I will expand the existing ESD facility at the Center by adding three 1,000,000 gallon ESDs to the two existing 1,000,000 gallon ESDs that CB&I supplied under a contract in 1998. CB&I's scope of work under this latest contract is larger than that in 1998, and includes the design and supply of the surrounding structural steel, circulating mixers, pumps, and other ESD-related equipment in addition to the turnkey supply and commissioning of the three vessels.
CB&I will also upgrade the two existing ESDs to incorporate one of the Company's latest ESD innovations, a patented internal liquid discharge system that utilizes gas-tight, positive-pressure containment in order to reduce maintenance costs, maximize operating reliability and minimize odor emissions.
This latest award expands CB&I's long record of service to the wastewater industry through the technology of its subsidiary CBI Walker. CB&I has designed and installed more than 70 ESDs and has developed several patented and proprietary improvements.
The benefits of ESDs over conventional digesters include a smaller footprint, improved performance reliability, enhanced process control, reduced maintenance, gas-tight construction and reduced energy demand. ESDs have been successfully applied in both mesophilic and thermophilic digestion applications, meeting the demand for higher end-product quality at increased loading rates.
