DETROIT, March 18, 2003 -- The Environmental Management Association (EMA) will honor the City of Detroit Water and Sewage Department with the association's 2003 Environmental Achievement Award on Thursday, March 20, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Detroit Athletic Club.
The award recognizes work done by the department to clean Connor Creek, on the city's east side, by constructing a combined sewer overflow control facility to minimize impact on the Detroit River and dredging sediment from the creek -- the first time the creek has been dredged in more than 40 years. The Connor Creek clean-up is expected to have significant positive impact on the environment.
The EMA represents business professionals, scientists, government officials and others interested in promoting environmental and economic development in Michigan. The EMA represents the interests of environmental professionals through legislative and regulatory advocacy, provides consumer information about environmental services and promotes the use of sound scientific principles in environmental management.
