Tampa, FL, Aug. 1, 2003 - Water wars are being fought in communities around the United States and the world.
Driven by drought, economics, and the ongoing pressure of growth, the battle for control and protection of water resources will hound humanity forever. In the thought-provoking new book, Water Wars: A Story of People, Politics and Power, author Honey Rand presents an insider's look at local "water wars" and the people involved in them.
Water Wars is the story of a dispute over public water supply development and use in West Central Florida. It is about politics and policy development, but it is mostly about people. After years of bitter dispute and competition for limited water supplies, the local governments and the regional regulator sought means to move beyond conflict to collaboration. The story describes what people said and did, how policy was made, and what happens to the people who are trying to make it work.
"Water Wars: A Story of People, Politics and Power is a story about activists who wanted to change the way things were done. It is about the awesome power of government and the amazing power of people to change the circumstances in which they find themselves," says Rand, who was the communication director at the water regulation agency during the water wars.
Water supply and quality is a problem in most coastal communities and virtually anywhere that drought, growth, and public service is a factor. "Whether people are fighting for environmental, health care, education or any other kind of public policy, this story demonstrates how each of us have the power to change the system and how together we can make it happen," Rand said.
