MADISON, Wis., Jan. 20, 2003 - Thermo Electron Corporation will once again sponsor the Maurice F. Hasler Award. This prestigious award, presented by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh every two years at the Pittsburgh Conference, recognizes notable achievements in spectroscopy that have significantly improved applications on a broad scale.

The Maurice F. Hasler award was established in 1970, in memoriam of the co-founder and president of Applied Research Laboratories (ARL), which is known today as Thermo ARL, a Thermo Electron business. Dr. Hasler was recognized worldwide as a foremost scientist in the field of spectrochemical analysis.

Under his leadership, ARL championed a number of innovations in the fields of optical emissions and X-ray fluorescence, including the first commercially available grating spectrograph and the first curved crystal X-ray spectrometer.

The 2003 Hasler Award will be presented to Jack L. Koenig, Professor of the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, honoring his lifelong dedication to developing spectroscopic methods and instrumentation for polymers. Among Professor Koenig's accomplishments is his classic textbook "Spectroscopy of Polymers," widely used in polymer science courses. This year's award ceremony will take place March 11, 2003, at the Pittsburgh Conference.

A leader in spectroscopy, Thermo Electron manufactures AA, ICP, ICP-MS, FT-IR, near-IR, Optical Emission, Raman, UV-Vis, fluorescence, XRD, and XRF instruments - as well as microscopes, sampling accessories, software, and spectral reference databases.
