Sept. 3, 2003 -- As part of the celebration of St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary Sweden will be arranging several activities, including several with a focus on environmental technology and sustainable development. The aim is to further develop and promote stronger cooperation between Swedish and Russian companies, municipalities and public authorities.
The Minister for the Environment, Lena Sommestad will open the seminar taking place on the 3rd of September at Hotel Pulkovskaja, a joint cooperation between the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sida, the Swedish Trade Council and SweHeat.
The event is a follow-up of the environmental seminars held in St. Petersburg in March 2002. The theme will be "The Sustainable City", with focus on water and wastewater treatment, waste management and district heating. "The Sustainable City", is a new concept, presented at the UN-summit on sustainable development in Johannesburg in 2002, which highlights new and effective technological solutions for urban sustainability. The concept has a system approach emphasising important synergies and interactions between different urban supply systems.
Seminars and activities will be attended by decision makers from St. Petersburg and northwest Russia and representatives within water and wastewater treatment, waste management and district heating. Representatives from Swedish and international financial organisations, governments and organisations will also attend the seminars.
- There is no doubt that Swedish environmental technology and district heating in general is cutting edge. There are a number of very competent and innovative companies that have developed world leading technologies and methods within these fields. Sweden was one of the first countries in the world to recognize the growing number of environmental problems and include these on the political agenda.
Today Sweden and Swedish companies can look back on a number of major successes in the fields of environment and energy saving. Successes and experiences we would like to share with our Russian neighbours at the seminars in St. Petersburg, says Rutger Engsäll, Senior Vice President at the Swedish Trade Council and head of the Swedish Environmental Technology Network.
Sweden has a long tradition of cooperation with the region of St. Petersburg regarding trade and development. The cultural and historical bonds are also unique. The seminar will hopefully strengthen professional and commercial networks between Sweden and Russia and result in resource effective and environmental friendly cities around the Baltic Sea.

The Swedish Environmental Technology Network - Swedentech - is a sector program within the Swedish Trade Council.
