ALEXANDRIA, VA, Sept. 12, 2003 -- The Water Environment Federation (WEF), in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture - NRCS, United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and United States Department of Energy, announces the Animal Residuals Conference: Alternative Technologies, Approaches, and Biosecurity.
The 3-day conference scheduled for November 2-4, 2003 at the Sheraton National Hotel in Arlington, VA, will identify and discuss successful long-term solutions to the environmental and biosecurity challenges associated with livestock and poultry production.
The public expects all industries, including agriculture, to do its part for environmental health while maintaining affordable, consistent, and high-quality products. With the Conservation Provisions of the 2002 Farm Bill, continuing research efforts, and a growing focus on alternative manure management technologies and approaches, animal agriculture now has many of the tools needed to enhance its environmental stewardship efforts.
According to Conference Co-Chair Tom Christensen (USDA NRCS), "through this conference we plan to explore technology and implementation issues, economic and market development needs, environmental improvement opportunities, biosecurity issues, and lessons learned."
Co-chaired by Ted Payseur (Veenstra and Kimm Consulting Engineers), the program will include two days of case studies on topics such as alternative technology, management approaches, financing, value-added options - solids, and value-added options - energy. Other program elements include: a special Sunday half-day workshop, an exhibition, reception, two luncheons, and complimentary Internet proceedings.
