MORGANTOWN, WV, Jan. 23, 2001 — A booklet titled "Animal Agriculture: Waste Management Practices" is now available from the National Small Flows Clearinghouse (NSFC).
Developed by the U.S. General Accounting Office-Resources, Community, and Economic Development Division, this booklet discusses the growing concern over pollution from intensive livestock and poultry production. Large volumes of waste can threaten surface water and groundwater quality in the event of waste spills, leakage from waste storage facilities, and runoff from fields.
This booklet provides information about 1) waste management practices used in the U.S.; 2) practices used in other countries; 3) potential new practices based on technologies transferred from other industries; 4) federal financial and technical assistance available to producers for waste management and the processes for obtaining this assistance; and 5) the role of federal agencies in conducting and/or supporting research to develop new waste management practices, including innovative uses of current practices.
Also included are four appendices with summary information about U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and other federal financial and technical assistance programs, and selected practices producers have installed with assistance from the Environmental Quality Incentives Program. This 44-page booklet can be used as a reference document for several audiences, including local, state, and public health officials; engineers; planners; state regulatory agency personnel; researchers; consultants; finance officers; contractors/developers; and the general public.
