Palm Desert, Calif., Nov. 20, 2001 — USFilter has been selected to design and supply a complete wastewater treatment plant for Calcasieu Refining in Lake Charles, La.

The new plant, which will include oil/water separation, aeration and clarification equipment, will allow Calcasieu Refining to treat the increased wastewater flow associated with major process expansions over the next two years, while maintaining existing net load discharge levels. In order to meet the timetable for the first process expansion, the equipment for the new wastewater treatment plant will be designed and shipped to the job site in four-and-a-half months.

Says Toni Bennett, technical, safety & environmental superintendent at Calcasieu Refining, "Because we have numerous construction projects going on simultaneously at the site, we wanted a wastewater treatment company with significant experience in the petroleum industry that could provide all the major equipment, coordinate the design of the system and provide a complete mechanical and process guarantee. USFilter fit that bill."

The single-source vendor approach proved to be mutually beneficial to both Calcasieu Refining and USFilter. Says Tom Schultz, petrochemical market manager for USFilter, "Being able to coordinate the entire process design of the system meant that we could release equipment for fabrication on an accelerated schedule, and therefore meet a very aggressive construction time frame."

USFilter was able to reuse some of the existing wastewater treatment equipment and tanks on site, reducing the cost of the new wastewater treatment system and significantly reducing the area needed for the new system. USFilter also identified other equipment and systems on site that could be used for temporary treatment while modifications to the existing system were made.

Local consulting engineer, PCE, Sulphur, La. is providing foundation, piping and electrical design. USFilter will provide process and instrumentation drawings (P&ID's), process flow diagrams, plot plans and equipment loads to PCE so they can complete their part of the design. USFilter will also install the clarifier steel tank and clarifier mechanism.
