MORGANTOWN, WV, Feb. 9, 2001-A booklet titled " Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Using Sand Filter Treatment Systems: Guidelines and Specifications" is now available from the National Small Flows Clearinghouse (NSFC).
Prepared by the Placer County Environmental Health Services, this booklet contains guidelines that set minimum design and construction standards for intermittent sand filters installed in Placer County, California. A group of county Environmental Health Services staff, local design consultants, and local onsite sewage system installers developed these guidelines.
The guidelines are not a design manual, but rather encourage innovative and creative thinking where appropriate, recognizing that there are often different ways to achieve optimum results. The booklet offers useful, effective designs and uses advanced technology based on sound engineering. Information is provided about setback requirements, system sizing, design guidelines, a distribution bed example, pumps and floats, and detailed diagrams. Also included are operation and maintenance requirements, a sample construction inspection report, a checklist of design considerations, and a glossary of terms. This 39-page booklet may be useful to engineers, planners, contractors/developers, and local and public health officials.
