YELLOW SPRINGS, OH, March 1, 2006 -- Tri-Cities North Regional Wastewater Authority, a privately owned wastewater treatment plant in Dayton, OH, was concerned with operating costs, quality control of data monitoring and complying with permit limits. The plant treats an average of 8 mgd, serving a population of approximately 80,000. The effluent is then pumped into the Great Miami River.

Tri-Cities installed a YSI 6500 Environmental Process Monitor and YSI 600XL sonde together with its existing SCADA system. The YSI 600XL sonde is stationed in a trough that contains water pumped from the effluent tank. The sonde continuously monitors pH, dissolved oxygen and temperature data, which is read by the environmental process monitor once an hour. Plant operators can read real-time data from the front of the environmental process monitor, which has a large display, or from their SCADA system.

The YSI 6500 environmental process monitor converts the digital output of a YSI 6-Series sonde to a 4-20 mA output, which interfaces with the plant's process control and SCADA system. The distance between the sonde and the environmental process monitor can be hundreds of feet because of the SDI-12 digital connection. This allows the YSI 6500 to be mounted outside if needed, or inside, where the equipment can be in sight of the operator at all times. The Tri-Cities wastewater treatment plant uses maximum and minimum values for pH and dissolved oxygen to trigger its alarm system.

Maintenance is as easy as a weekly check of the calibration of the sensors and a monthly change of the DO membrane. The sonde can be calibrated without having to disconnect it from the system.

Tri-Cities has reduced labor needs and the cost of installation and operation by utilizing a versatile environmental process monitor. They are able to link with their existing SCADA systems to monitor and record multiparameter water quality data while using only one environmental process monitor.
