• EU coasts OK for bathing, while inland water sites worsen -- BRUSSELS, Belgium, June 12, 2006 -- The vast majority of coastal bathing areas in European Union nations are safe for swimmers, but the water quality at inland sites continued to decline in 2005, the European Commission reported Friday. It said while 96% of coastal sites met minimum water quality standards, the number of inland sites not meeting those standards fell by 3.8 percentage points, to 86%, since 2004. The drop since 2003 totals 7 percentage points, the EU head office said, attributing the 2005 drop partly to "insufficient sampling of water quality," which counts as noncompliance with a 1976 EU law.
