OEM Networking Directory updated with over 15,000 environmental specifiers
NORTHFIELD, IL, April 18, 2006 -- Suppliers of pumps, valves, materials, instruments, controls, and various services are often selling to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The critical buying decisions may be made early in the project by the architect/engineer (A/E) or other specifier.
Over 15,000 companies around-the-world have been identified as either significant OEM purchasers or A/E specifiers for environmental, contamination control and energy systems. These companies along with the contact information for 50,000 decision makers are listed in the continually updated online "OEM Networking Directory," published by the McIlvaine Company.
The size and importance of individual OEMs and A/Es varies greatly depending on the industry served. There are only a few large coal-fired boiler plant designers. On the other hand, there are large numbers of companies supplying biomass fired plants.
Only 50 scrubber companies serve the power industry, where as thousands of scrubber companies pursue the smaller applications.
Large numbers of companies supply liquid filtration systems and clarifiers, although only a small number of companies make centrifuges.
Many companies around-the-world build modular cleanrooms, but a relatively small number of companies design the large semiconductor and life science cleanrooms.
The water and wastewater treatment equipment market is populated by many thousands of local suppliers. On the other hand there are a few multibillion dollar international companies with significant market shares.
In general, the numbers are smallest at the raw materials stage and largest at the final system supply stage. So in dust collection there are only a few hundred suppliers of the fibers and resins used by the industry. There are many more suppliers of roll goods. There are even larger numbers of bag suppliers. At the end of the chain the system suppliers are the most numerous.
The decision-making process relative to a new component or service is often complex and includes several individuals at both the OEM and A/E companies. Furthermore, the right contact may not be the one first identified. Often purchasing people are not the best contacts to introduce new ideas.

• PACS joins forces with NSF International -- PITTSBURGH, April 18, 2006 -- Professional Analytical and Consulting Services (PACS) Inc. accepted an invitation by NSF International to jointly provide a short course titled "Activated Carbon: Technical and Certification Issues for Activated Carbon Containing Treatment Units". This course is provided annually in May in Ann Arbor, MI -- about one half-hour from Detroit. • Stone countertop company reduces dewatering costs -- WARRENDALE, PA, April 18, 2006 -- Surface Technology Inc. of Elkridge, MD, knew it needed a larger filter press. What it didn't know was how the new press was going to improve its whole system. The company cuts granite and Corian to make custom countertops. It cuts the material on saws and CNC machines using water to cool the blade and remove the waste material. It then wet-sands semi-finished countertops using water-cooled hand sanders. In the process, it uses tremendous amounts of water. A filter press is used to recover the water for reuse and dewater the solids for landfill. There's currently no commercial value for the waste solids. After inspection of their exisiting filter press, we identified the following issues:
• It was unable to make good cakes.
• They were running three cycles per eight-hour shift.
• The cloths had to be pressure washed after each cycle, causing them to swap-out a spare set of plates and cloths after every cycle.
• They were unable to keep up with the plant water usage, so they were adding city water to the recycle loop.
• The existing "system" required adding precoat to every batch.
• They had a dedicated operator assigned to the press, who was either running the press or cleaning the cloths...

• Southwest Water names Mark A. Swatek its CEO -- LOS ANGELES, April 18, 2006 -- Southwest Water Company announced that its board of directors has selected Mark A. Swatek as chief executive officer. Swatek, 53, will join the company in mid-May, succeeding Anton C. Garnier, chairman and chief executive officer, who has led the company for 38 years. Swatek most recently was president of MWH State and Local Government operations, the largest operating division of MWH Global, a $1 billion worldwide engineering consulting and construction firm that specializes in serving the municipal water and wastewater market. In this capacity, he managed the 1000 person, $350 million revenue per year U.S. municipal operations which provides water/wastewater engineering, program management, and facility design-build activities for city, county, and state governments. • Most contaminated counties in California shown to be the most populated -- New study from Environmental Data Resources ranks all counties in California from highest to lowest levels of environmental risk with Los Angeles, Alameda and San Diego topping the list -- MILFORD, CT, April 18, 2006 -- A new study reveals that the counties with the greatest number of residential inhabitants also have the most widespread problems with contamination. The finding is derived from a study conducted by Environmental Data Resources (EDR), a leading national provider of environmental information, which provides a county-by-county examination of environmental hazards that could have a negative impact on everything from personal health to property values for residents located in proximity to the toxic sites. Of the 10 most populated counties in California, Contra Costa County ranked lowest in incidents of contamination. • WaterChef announces sale of 100 PureSafe Water Station units to Chinese joint venture -- GLEN HEAD, NY, April 18, 2006 -- David A. Conway, president and CEO of WaterChef Inc., announced that a joint venture formed between China's Sino-American Jinzhou Yuebao and C. Trade Pure Water Group has entered into a $10 million contract with WaterChef to purchase 100 PureSafe Water Stations. The joint venture will be based in Northeast China and will utilize the 15,000 gallons per day PureSafe units to purify water from local sources for sale to governmental, industrial, commercial, and individual consumers. Production of the units is expected to start in May, with deliveries beginning in June. C. Trade Group expects to ship these initial units to China over the next two years. C. • Graham Corp. lands $1.3 million New Zealand condenser order -- BATAVIA, NY, April 18, 2006 -- Graham Corp. announced today that it received an order valued at $1.3 million for a steam surface condenser to be installed at the Glenbrook Power Station, a cogeneration facility located in New Zealand. The condenser will replace equipment originally supplied by Graham. Revenue for this contract will be recognized on a%age-of-completion basis, and shipment is presently scheduled for the third fiscal quarter ending Dec. 31. The 112 MW cogeneration facility, which is integrated with a steelworks operation owned by NZ Steel, uses waste heat output from the steel production to generate electricity. Electricity generated is used, in turn, for the operation of the steelworks operation, with the excess output sold to the national electric grid in New Zealand. Graham will design the new condenser with more corrosive-resistant, resilient materials in order to both lengthen the life of the condenser and allow it to better endure the highly caustic nature of boiler treatment chemicals...
• DWR increases 2006 State Water Project allocation to 100% -- SACRAMENTO, CA, April 18, 2006 -- In an unprecedented move, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has announced it is increasing its allocation of 2006 State Water Project (SWP) water for long-term contractors from 80% to 100% of requests. This is the first time since SWP Water Contractors began asking for their full Table A amounts that DWR has been able to deliver 100% of the requested amounts. A "Table A" amount is the maximum contractual quantity of water that an SWP Contractor can request each year. An uncommon combination of very wet conditions and conveniently spaced storm events occurring later than normal in the year has led to a very healthy water supply...
