• Burley, Idaho, awards Veolia Water long term contract for wastewater treatment services -- HOUSTON, May 25, 2006 -- A deep understanding of community needs was the driver in the city of Burley, Idaho's unanimous approval of a 10-year, $5.6 million contract for wastewater services with Veolia Water North America - West LLC. The public-private partnership calls for Veolia Water to manage the city's $29 million, 2-million-gallon-per-day (MGD) municipal wastewater treatment facility when it comes online in October 2006. In the interim, Veolia Water will assist with startup activities to ensure reliable, long-term performance of the plant that will serve approximately 10,000 people. Additionally, the company will manage the city's 2.3-MGD industrial wastewater treatment plant and provide oversight of the industrial pretreatment program...

• Kolon Industries to provide membrane fibers, modules for ITT's reuse, drinking water systems -- CHARLOTTE, NC, May 25, 2006 -- ITT continues to strengthen its capabilities as a water treatment solutions provider. Kolon Industries, Inc. has signed an agreement to exclusively supply membrane fibers and modules for ITT Advance Water Treatment Division's Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs) which are used in reuse systems and drinking water systems. The company will also support and provide ITT with long term membrane fiber and module development. Kolon -- originally Korean Nylon -- is a $4.8 billion Korean based global supplier of polymers, resins, chemicals, textiles, membranes and plastics supply company. • HMMOS renews contract with Borough of Caldwell, NJ, for seven more years -- CALDWELL, NJ, May 25, 2006 -- The Borough of Caldwell unanimously voted to renew Hatch Mott MacDonald's contract to operate and maintain the Borough's 4.5 MGD sanitary wastewater treatment plant for an additional seven years. • Northwest Pipe Company announces $15.5 million Sioux Falls order -- PORTLAND, OR, May 25, 2006 -- Northwest Pipe Company reported today that it was named as pipe supplier to the SD-02070 Treated Water Pipeline -- Segments 5 & 3B to supply approximately $15.5 million of welded steel pipe for the Lewis & Clark Rural Water System in Sioux Falls, SD. It received a verbal agreement from S.J. Louis of Waite Park, MN, to supply about 86,000 feet of 54-inch diameter steel pipe. The pipe is expected to be manufactured in the company's Denver, CO, division with delivery scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2006...

• USGS report shows where arsenic most likely in New England groundwater -- MANCHESTER, NH, May 25, 2006 -- Many private groundwater wells in New Hampshire and Maine may have arsenic at concentrations close to or above federal safety standards for public water supplies. A recently released study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) shows the likely locations of elevated arsenic. Bedrock aquifer wells -- often known as rock, deep, or artesian wells -- are the most common type of well installed for homes in the region and it is the bedrock aquifer that is the primary source of arsenic in the locations where it is elevated, according to the findings. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, identifies factors that may contribute to high arsenic in wells, and confirms findings from previous studies. Private wells supply drinking water for over 40% of the population of northern New England and aren't regulated by state and federal agencies. • Gov. Rendell announces funding to protect public health, clean Pa. streams -- $52 million to benefit communities in 17 counties; Effort also to promote community revitalization efforts -- HARRISBURG, PA, May 25, 2006 -- Rejuvenated waterways, enhanced communities and improved public safety are just some of the things that will happen with the investment of $52 million in Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (Pennvest) funds, Governor Edward G. Rendell said yesterday. Of the money awarded, $48.6 million comes in the form of low-interest loans, while $3.7 million is grants that will fund 25 clean water projects in 17 counties across Pennsylvania. The awards range from a $125,000 loan to a water authority in Clinton County to drill exploratory wells and design a drinking water transmission line, to an $11 million loan to a community in Clearfield County that is planning to replace nearly all of its sewage collection system to eliminate wet weather discharges of untreated sewage into the West Branch of the Susquehanna River...
