WHITE PLAINS, NY, June 13, 2007 -- Two Malcolm Pirnie employees have been chosen to represent the firm at the prestigious National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 2007 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. Dr. Rula Deeb was selected to attend and Dr. Vanessa Speight will present a program entitled "Distribution Systems: The Next Frontiers."

The event, to be held in September at Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA, will bring together a select group of the nation's outstanding engineers, aged 30–45, from industry, academia and government. The final list of invitees, limited to 100 engineers, represents a cross-section of the engineering community. Because advances in engineering move so quickly across many facets of the profession, the NAE created the symposium series to facilitate collaboration in engineering, the transfer of new techniques and approaches across fields, and establishment of contacts among the next generation of engineering leaders.

Dr. Speight, an Associate in Malcolm Pirnie's Cincinnati office, manages the delivery of drinking water process and planning services to municipal clients. With more than 12 years of professional experience, she specializes in distribution system modeling and water quality research, with expertise in disinfection by-product occurrence and prediction, disinfectant decay, and development of sampling strategies. A resident of Hyde Park, OH, Dr. Speight has a BE in Civil Engineering from McGill University and both an MS and PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is also active in the American Water Works Association and the International Water Association.

Dr. Deeb is a Senior Associate working from the firm's Emeryville, CA office whose expertise includes water and wastewater treatment, and hazardous waste remediation with an emphasis on in-situ bioremediation. She recently managed applied research projects for the WateReuse Foundation, the Water Environment Research Foundation, the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program, the National Water Research Institute and the American Petroleum Institute. The focus of many of her projects is the environmental fate and transport of emerging water contaminants. A resident of Walnut Creek, Dr. Deeb holds a B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics from Warren Wilson College, and both an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. She is active in the Groundwater Resources Association of California, the National Ground Water Association, the American Chemical Society, the WateReuse Association and the Water Environment Federation.

Malcolm Pirnie Inc., century-old environmental consulting firm, provides governmental and industrial clients with comprehensive services in water and wastewater engineering, solid and hazardous waste management, environmental sciences and, through its Red Oak Consulting Division, management and IT consulting. With a diversified staff of over 1,700 engineers, scientists and consultants in 60+ offices nationwide, Pirnie has won over 200 professional awards for project excellence.
