CHERRY HILL, NJ, Oct. 9, 2007 -- New Jersey American Water has accepted Franklin Township's Environmental Commission Environmental Stewardship Award. Arnold Schmidt, Chairman of the Commission, presented the award to company representatives during an awards ceremony held in the Franklin Township Council Chambers on Oct. 5.

"New Jersey American Water has taken its commitment to the environment a step further by installing the largest ground-mounted solar field east of the Mississippi River. The energy produced by the solar field provides up to 20 percent of the energy needed to power the Canal Road Water Treatment Plant, located here in Franklin Township," said Schmidt.

In 2005, New Jersey American Water began installing solar panels at its Canal Road Water Treatment Plant as a way to decrease energy costs. Approximately 1.3 million people throughout 57 municipalities in eight NJ counties, encompassing an area of about 500 square miles, are served by the Canal Road Plant.

New Jersey American Water is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and/or wastewater services to more than 2.6 million people. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Water.
