TASHKENT, March 31, 2004 -- A brochure on environmental issues published by the OSCE Centre in Tashkent and the Uzbek non-governmental organization, Sreda Obitaniya (Environment), is aimed at raising public awareness of sustainable development in the country.
Over 1,000 copies of the brochure in Russian language will be distributed free-of-charge to public libraries, state environmental agencies, international organizations, and NGOs. The brochure, entitled "About the Environment", includes a collection of articles meant to stimulate discussion about environmental protection.
Articles on a variety of topics, such as environmental law and policy, the relationship between the media and sustainable development, natural resources and bio-diversity issues, provide an excellent overview of the environmental situation in Uzbekistan.
The brochure is a compilation of presentations from an April 2003 roundtable for local journalists organized by OSCE Centre, the State Committee for Nature Protection, the local newspaper Pravda Vostoka, and the NGO Sreda Obitaniya. The roundtable was intended to educate journalists about environmental issues, with the goal of increasing transparency about environmental matters in the media.
