CHICAGO, Aug. 26, 2004 (U.S. Newswire) -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has named two Wisconsin wastewater treatment plants among the best-operated in the six-state region for 2004.
The Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District and the Markesan plants are two of ten facilities to receive EPA Regional Operation and Maintenance Awards this year. EPA will present awards to both plants on Wednesday, Sept. 1. The Green Bay Metropolitan Sewerage District was recognized as the best plant in the "large, advanced treatment" category. It serves about 176,000 people in Green Bay and 16 surrounding communities, including 48 large industrial facilities. It discharges to the Fox River near its mouth on Green Bay. It is managed by Paul Thormodsgard, executive director. EPA will present the award at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at the treatment facility, 2231 N. Quincy St.
The Markesan plant was recognized as the second-best plant in the "small, advanced treatment" category. It serves about 1,400 people and discharges to the Grand River, a tributary of the Fox River. It is managed by Tony Doro, water and wastewater superintendent. EPA will present the award at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at City Hall, 150 S. Bridge St.
