TOLEDO, OH, Dec. 15, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Blue Planet Research & Technology Inc. plans for sea trials and the certification of its Oil Separating Coalescing Air Refining System (OSCAR) to begin in early 2005.

The OSCAR System is best described as a compact shipboard liquid filtration system coupled with a high bandwidth telemetry system. Since the system can be monitored from any location on shore from any position at sea, it can facilitate enforcement of environmental regulations by providing water quality and quantity of effluent along with the vessel's position to a monitoring facility onshore. OSCAR is the subject of US Patent #6,444,119 B1 (Bilge Water Processing System with Remote Monitoring and Control).

"Currently, pumping polluted water overboard, which is illegal and extremely detrimental to the environment, is unfortunately more economical than the alternatives of cleaning the water prior to pumping overboard or holding the polluted water until in port to be processed in an environmentally safe manner. In an attempt to offer an economical yet environmentally responsible alternative, we have developed a novel oil separating, coalescing, air refining system that actually monitors and reports itself to regulatory and enforcement agencies," said Gil Mains Jr., CEO and developer of the OSCAR System.

"The system was first presented at the 22nd United States Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (US/UJNR) Marine Facility Panel and we believe that the system will not only significantly reduce an operator's environmental liability, it may also drive regulatory standards in the future. The Company plans to conduct rigorous testing of the system's capabilities at sea in early 2005, which will include independent certification of results by a well-known oceanographic institution."
