The metropolis of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, just 100 miles south of Rabigh, houses around 4 million people.
Last week, Toray Industries Inc. announced that it had received a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane supply order for Rabigh 3 Desalination Plant in Rabigh, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Not only will the 158 million gallons daily (MGD) Desalination Plant be the largest seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant in the country, it will also be one of the largest SWRO plants in the world.
Toray Membrane Middle East LLC (TMME), Toray’s local subsidiary located in Saudi Arabia, will supply the RO membranes and provide technical services. TMME will supply locally manufactured product, provide commissioning support and autopsy service to help resolve water shortages in the Middle East, which will also ultimately contribute to stable energy supplies to the world.
Gulf countries are investing extensively in infrastructure to cater to rising populations. They are pushing ahead with plans to build desalination plants to secure sufficient drinking water. With increasing awareness of environmental footprints and cost reduction, demand is rising for RO desalination plants that consume less energy than conventional evaporation.
