For many years, polywrap has been a proven system to protect ductile iron pipes from exterior corrosion. Recently, there has been the development of a newer version of polywrap called enhanced polyethylene.
Enhanced polyethylene is a 3-layer, co extruded film that is fused together to make a durable film that is no less than 8 mils thick. This film not only creates a barrier between the surface of the pipe and potentially corrosive soils but also has additives in the inner layer that help further protect the pipe from different forms of corrosion.
One of these two additives is a Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI). This helps neutralize corrosive liquids that may seep between the wrap and the pipe. The other is an antimicrobial additive, which fights against a number of different types of corrosion-causing organisms/bacteria. With these added characteristics, enhanced polyethylene can protect your ductile iron water and wastewater systems from exterior corrosion. While enhanced polyethylene does come at a higher cost than standard wrap, it is still much less expensive than other forms of corrosion protection with a much higher success rate and zero maintenance. AA Thread now offers VB3® Enhanced Polyethylene. WW
