BIG BEAR CITY, CA, Aug. 30, 2005 -- The California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA) announced its 2005 achievement award recipients at its annual conference in San Diego on Aug. 18. The awards recognize the achievements of publicly owned wastewater treatment agencies throughout California. Big Bear Area Regional Wastewater Agency (BBARWA) was recognized for their efforts to inform the community about local water and wastewater issues.

"The goal for the groundwater recharge and recycled water public outreach program is to inform the public about our local water supplies and involve them in the important decision making process," stated BBARWA Governing Board member Liz Harris.

The goal of the Achievement Awards Program is to educate other California agencies about successful programs so that they can replicate strategies. The specific category that BBARWA won an award for was Public Outreach/Education Award for a small agency. BBARWA competed against two other wastewater agencies in California.

The California Association of Sanitation Agencies (www.casaweb.org) was formed in 1955 to provide proactive leadership, innovative solutions and timely education to create sound public health and environmental goals. Currently, CASA's membership represents 90 percent of the sewered population in the state.

BBARWA (www.bigbearwatersolutions.org) was established in 1974 to transport, treat and dispose of wastewater for the Big Bear Valley area residents and businesses. BBARWA is conducting studies to expand its recycled water program and to develop a new groundwater recharge system.
