• Marine Corps Air Station Yuma honored for drinking water distribution study using InfoWater modeling
BROOMFIELD, CO, Aug. 20, 2009 -- MWH Soft, a leading global provider of environmental and water resources applications software, today announced that the United States Marine Corps Air Station Yuma (MCAS) has won the GEOFidelis Project of the Year award for a vital project that optimizes distribution system facilities management using MWH Soft's industry-leading InfoWater software. The decision reflects the military's ongoing investment in geospatial modeling technology. MWH Soft's advanced GIS-centric software platform for water distribution system design, operation and management played a key role in this project.
GEOFidelis is part of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) business process modernization program. It was established to define the USMC's approach to enterprise geospatial systems and create a common infrastructure foundation that supports inter-operability across the Marine Corps and delivers authoritative geospatial data. The program's annual awards recognize USMC personnel who best use geospatial information to further the Marine Corps installation management mission.
MCAS Yuma is the USMC's premier aviation training base, serving approximately 5,000 active duty Marines. With 2.8 million acres (11 km²) of bombing and aviation training ranges and superb flying weather, MCAS Yuma supports 80 percent of the Marine Corps' air-to-ground aviation training. Spurred by significant concerns about the integrity and condition of the base's aging potable water distribution system, whose failure would directly impact the Air Station's mission, MCAS Yuma initiated a study to determine system deficiencies and make recommendations for improvements, future maintenance, and increased safety and reliability.
The study focused on developing a GIS-integrated software model of the Air Station's potable water system using MWH Soft InfoWater software. Three scenarios were modeled: current development scenarios at peak and low demand loads, and a future development scenario at peak demand load. Areas of the base which did not meet regulatory requirements for minimum pressures were noted. The accuracy of the model was verified by comparing the results of fire hydrant flow tests with predicted results.
The study resulted in an updated maintenance action plan and the immediate implementation of several construction projects.
In submitting the project for the GEOFidelis Award, Project Manager Andrew G. Moyer said that as a result of the project, "The Station Installation and Logistics Department is able to forecast future water system requirements and properly plan for expansion, maintenance and system upgrades to meet demand. The Environmental department will have an additional tool to track water chlorination and age. The Base Services Department will be able to design a more efficient water system flushing program, saving water, time, and money. Savings to the Marine Corps and the Department of the Navy will continue to be realized as a direct result of the Water Distribution Study with continued improvements and development of the water model."
By accelerating large model building and automating scores of tedious tasks, InfoWater enables users to create, analyze and design accurate models very quickly. InfoWater integrates seamlessly with ArcGIS (ESRI, Redlands, CA) to address all the operations of a typical water distribution system, helping engineers develop better, higher-quality designs and capital improvement programs by quickly and accurately performing the most difficult hydraulic analyses -- including multi-point and extended period fire flow simulations, variable speed pumps, and advanced water quality calculations.
"InfoWater continues to be a leading water distribution modeling and design solution for any utility with a strong geospatial commitment," said MWH Soft President and COO Paul F. Boulos, Ph.D., Hon.D.WRE. "At MWH Soft, we focus on providing the fastest, most feature-rich and strongest GIS-integrated water modeling, operation, and capital planning tools available. We are deeply proud to know MWH Soft played a part in this award-winning Marine Corps project."
