• By the end of this year, Aqua America will use Situator to monitor 90 remote sites throughout Pennsylvania
IRVINE, CA, Sept. 21, 2009 -- Orsus®, the pioneer and innovator in the field of Situation Management, a comprehensive and unique approach that coordinates the interaction between people, alerting sources and responses, announced today that Aqua America, the largest US-based investor owned water company, has deployed Situator to integrate and manage multiple security systems and other devices at its water-related facilities across Pennsylvania.
The project involves using Situator to monitor and manage Aqua America's access control, video surveillance, fiber optic intrusion detection, and radar systems. Situator is currently used to integrate and manage data from these systems at Aqua America's pump stations, water treatment facilities, water storage tanks, and dams.
By the end of this year, Aqua America will add well stations, bringing the number of managed sites up to 90. Fire detection systems will be added beginning early next year, and Aqua America is considering adding SCADA systems at a later date.
"Many of our locations are remote and unmanned facilities, making system management and emergency response a top priority," said Terry Lyons, Safety and Security Manager for Bryn Mawr, Penn.-based Aqua America, which provides water to 3 million people. "Implementing Situator permits Aqua America to better utilize our existing security solutions, create actionable tasks in the event of an emergency and effectively manage situations."
One of the biggest challenges faced by any water company is ensuring its water supply is not compromised. A security breach would result in a 48 hour shutdown enforced by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and could cost $100,000 or more.
