MISSISSAUGA, ON, Canada, May 11, 2009 -- The Pressure Pipe Inspection Company Ltd. (PPIC) announced today that it has introduced a new long-term monitoring solution platform for critical water supply lines. An increasing number of utilities and pipeline operators are turning to long-term monitoring to help extend asset life, minimize the risk of pipeline failures and optimize infrastructure investments.

The solution platform combines PipeDiver™ technology, PulseFO™ fiber optics, and strategic monitoring devices to create customized solutions that best meet client needs and budgets. This approach helps ensure the provision of higher data quality to the pipeline operator and accelerates decision-making through near real-time information about the condition of the pipeline.

"Until now, pipeline operators have typically had to rely on a single technology for their long term monitoring program," said Dr. Brian Mergelas, President and CEO, PPIC. "This resulted in a higher total cost of ownership and often did not provide all of the required data to optimize their program. The new PPIC platform emphasizes the right technology mix to reduce the most risk per dollar invested."

Long-term monitoring programs are typically applied to large diameter water pipelines where a rupture or the loss of service would have a significant impact; such as primary feeder lines for cities or industrial facilities, pipelines under major roadways or highways, pipelines near railway or subway lines and other critical infrastructure such as hospitals, schools and government buildings.

According to Dr. Mergelas, "PPIC condition assessment and monitoring services are well proven and are being used throughout the world. This new technology platform reinforces our commitment to assist clients in generating more robust solutions that best meet their needs."

A significant advantage of the PPIC long-term monitoring solution is that once installed, the PipeDiver™ and PulseFO™ technologies are complementary and can both operate in the pipeline at the same time without need for dewatering or service shutdown. PPIC recommends using PipeDiver™ initially to obtain a baseline condition-assessment scan of the pipeline. Once the condition of the asset has been established, the right mix of services can be recommended including fiber optics, strategic acoustic monitoring or simply a repeat inspection program.

This monitoring solution was officially introduced at the North American Society for Trenchless Technology (NASTT) Annual Conference which took place last week in Chicago. Conference attendees took advantage of this opportunity to attend technical presentations about the platform and view the PulseFO™ fiber optic cable. Industry response was very positive and several new project opportunities were identified.
