June 18, 2002 -- More than 1,000 civil engineering students will gather for four days at the ASCE 150th Anniversary National Student Conference to showcase their problem-solving skills and creativity.
Civil engineering students from 112 universities and colleges in North America, Turkey and Japan will purify a tub of filthy water using only common kitchen items, race canoes made of concrete and construct steel bridges in minutes flat.
The 15th annual ASCE/MBT National Concrete Canoe Competition and the 11th annual ASCE/AISC National Student Steel Bridge Competition will be held during the conference.
The June 21-24 event is sponsored by ASCE, the ASCE Student Chapter at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Master Builders, Inc. and the American Institute of Steel Construction, Inc.
For the first time in its 150-year history, ASCE is bringing together the generation of civil engineers that will tackle the infrastructure challenges of the future.
With the world's population expected to double by 2042, these future civil engineers will be faced with supplying clean water, controlling pollution and cutting your commuting time.
Founded in 1852, ASCE represents more than 125,000 civil engineers worldwide and is the nation's oldest engineering society. ASCE is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2002.
