HOUSTON, Sept. 15, 2005 -- A few days after the levies broke in New Orleans, Houston-based Headworks Inc.'s CEO Michele LaNoue joined with The Houston Business Journal and other small businesses to provide employment opportunities and lodging assistance for those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The HBJ's and Headworks' grassroots effort has reached beyond Texas as far as Detroit.
The HBJ has generously started a Katrina Relief Job Bank online at www.houston.bizjournalshire.com for companies looking to help. Compliments of HBJ, the $280 online job posting fee has been waived. Additional, the HBJ has committed to donating two pages in their weekly newspaper for job and lodging offers to the victims. The Houston Business Journal was the first local paper to respond to LaNoue's petition to provide free ad space to get the word out for this band of potential employers
The Houston Business Journal and Headworks Inc. are willing to donate advertising space for small business to lend support. The Houston Business Journal is creating a list of employers and jobs from local firms and national companies that wish to provide shelter along with employment opportunities to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina.
Many of the small companies LaNoue spoke with expressed willingness not only to offer jobs but also to assist the general population of hurricane Katrina survivors with their lodging. The cost of placing employment ads can easily equal what could be a month of rent for a hurricane survivor. By waiving these advertising fees, local papers make it possible for small businesses to maximize their giving potential.
