SAN FRANCISCO, June 13, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Paul Zielinski, Director of Environmental Management and Compliance of the Southeast Region of American Water, will accept the Directors Award of recognition from the Partnership for Safe Water, at the American Water Work's Association's Annual Conference & Exposition (AWWA ACE) in San Francisco, CA, on June 13.

Zielinski is accepting this award in recognition of his team's achievement at Pennsylvania American Water and Tennessee American Water. Both Pennsylvania American Water and Tennessee American Water have maintained the Directors Award for five consecutive years, an honor achieved by only 37 water utilities across the country.

The Partnership for Safe Water is a national volunteer initiative developed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other water organizations representing water suppliers striving to provide their communities with drinking water quality that surpasses the required federal standards. The Directors Award is presented to water systems that have completed a successful review in the Partnership's Self-Assessment and Peer Review phase in which utilities examine the capabilities of their treatment plant operation and administration, then creating a plan for implementing improvements.

"Maintaining Directors Award status for five years demonstrates our philosophy of constant vigilance to improve water quality. We are thrilled to receive national recognition for this ongoing commitment," Zielinski said.

Developed by the EPA and other water organizations striving to provide optimum quality drinking water, the Partnership currently includes more than 200 water utilities, collectively serving more than 85 million people. Pennsylvania American Water's ongoing participation in the program includes a rigorous review of treatment practices developed by national experts, and also includes a four-step, self-assessment and peer-review process.

Zielinski has been with American Water since 1981, serving Pennsylvania American Water until July, 2004, when he became Director of Environmental Management and Compliance of the Southeast Region of American Water.
