WOBURN, MA, April 7, 2005 -- How we isolate toxic waste and recapture it in a high quality, pure form for re-use, is but one of the topics which will be explored during the upcoming New England Water Environment Association's (NEWEA) seminar, "Current Successes and Future Challenges in Pharmaceutical and Biotech Wastewater Compliance."
Dr. Mike Curtis, a senior vice president of Fuss & O'Neill Consulting Engineers, the seminar sponsor, will moderate the day-long event. Ajit Ghorpade, Ph.D, senior engineer at Fuss & O'Neill is delivering a presentation on advanced solvent waste recovery and recycling in the pharmaceutical industry, which will address capture for reuse. The event will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at the Sheraton Newton Hotel in Newton, Mass.
The seminar will feature presentations of new technologies applied to meet pharmaceutical categorical regulations and detailed membrane treatment technologies, advanced biological treatments, steam stripping, bio-inactivation, and advanced solvent recovery techniques. A tour of Ionics, Inc., a state-of-the-art membrane fabrication facility, also will be offered to attendees.
"This is one of the most intriguing professional development days that has been offered in a long time and we are glad to be so involved," said Curtis, who is volunteer chair of NEWEA's Industrial Waste Committee, which is coordinating the event. "The pharmaceutical and biotech industries are vital to the New England region, and this event gives professionals in the area an inside look at some truly advanced developments and applications."
The event's other presentations will be given by Margaret Stewart, Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF); John Ellersick, PE, ENSR, Herve Garant, Ph.D, and Ana Echaniz of BioMetics Inc.; Jay Pimpare, EPA Region I Office, Boston, and Lee Dillard Adams, MADEP, Worcester; Paul O'Brien, Woodard & Curran; and Tim Swenson and Scott Jankovich, of Pfizer Global Manufacturing in Groton, Conn.
