ALEXANDRIA, VA, March 10, 2015 -- The Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) recently announced that it is seeking proposals to develop needed exposure and hazard data for three higher priority trace organics: Polybrominated Diphenyl ethers, Azithromycin and Ciprofloxacin.

These priority chemicals were identified in the 2009 Environmental Protection Agency Targeted National Sewage Sludge Survey.

Land application of biosolids has a long history of demonstrated beneficial use and minimal environmental and human health risks when conducted in accordance with best practices and existing regulations. However, concerns raised in response to published reports of the presence of trace organic compounds in biosolids necessitate additional evaluation and risk assessment.

This project, Developing Exposure and Toxicity Data for Priority Trace Organics in Biosolids (WERF project # TOBI2R15), represents the first step that WERF and its partners are taking to develop the needed fate, exposure, toxicity data, and ecotoxicity endpoints for higher priority trace organics to fill key data gaps and help bring resolution to this important issue.

Proposals are due no later than April 30, 2015. For more information, visit www.werf.org/funding.
