Aug. 27, 2015 -- Today, U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson of North Dakota -- in collaboration with a dozen states -- blocked the Clean Water Rule, or "Waters of the U.S." rule, from taking effect on Friday, Aug. 28.
The rule is designed to protect streams and wetlands that form the foundation of the nation's water resources from ongoing threats of pollution and degradation (see: "EPA, Army Corps propose rule to clarify protection for U.S. streams, wetlands").
According to new reports, Erickson ordered the ruling to be suspended based on the claim that it can potentially infringe on states' sovereignty and cost millions of dollars for local farms, businesses and municipalities.
The other states involved in the injunction are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, South Dakota and Wyoming.
