Sept. 18, 2002 -- About 300 students and teachers from every state and territory in the U.S. will be gathering on Oct. 6-10 on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, in Edgewater, Maryland, for the National Youth Watershed Summit.

The Summit is part of the Year of Clean Water celebration and is being sponsored by EPA and the American Clean Water Foundation. This five-day forum is designed to improve understanding of how both rural and urban land use practices can impact local watersheds.

The students and their advisors will participate in a series of educational, hands-on field experiences including: a canoe wetland/river trip, trail/terrestrial/arboreal research unit, an estuary sampling trip including water quality monitoring and biological sampling on the Chesapeake Bay, a visit to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and a trip to Washington, D.C.

Participants are being selected by their respective Governors based on their strong interest in aquatic environmental sciences, and commitment to share the knowledge gained at the summit with other youth and community leaders upon returning home.
