Dec. 5, 2002 -- The Town of West Warwick, Rhode Island is procuring an advanced wastewater treatment system for the reduction of total nitrogen from Ondeo Degremont, Inc. Valued at approximately $4.2 million, the system will include equipment, media, ancillary components and start-up assistance.

Surrounded by wetlands, the West Warwick WWTP discharges into a Narragansett Bay tributary and is subject to recently tightened New England regulations for total nitrogen effluent. Ondeo Degremont, Inc. will supply a BIOFOR® Biological Activated Filter System consisting of four nitrification cells and four denitrification cells.

The average day wet weather flow capacity will be 10.5 MGD, and the system will be capable of handling a hydraulic peak of 25.34 MGD. Total nitrogen effluent is expected to be below the state requirements of 8 mg/l.

Ondeo Degremont's BIOFOR® System contains a fixed, submerged granular media bed with both process air (in aerated systems) and influent wastewater combined in an upward flow. Known for its small footprint, the BIOFOR® system was an ideal solution for the West Warwick site, which had limited room for expansion. The technology has been widely used and proven in Europe, where land is scarce, and is gaining acclaim in North America.

The West Warwick system was designed collaboratively by James J. Geremia and Associates and EarthTech. "Ondeo Degremont's BIOFOR® system was a good solution for the space issues at this site," said Jim Geremia. Carlin Contracting of Waterford, Connecticut will install the system.

Ondeo Degremont is the Suez Environment subsidiary specializing in water and wastewater treatment plants. With more than 3,000 employees working in over 70 countries, Ondeo Degremont had revenues of $868 million in 2001.
