PORTLAND, OR, Jan. 18, 2011 -- Heavy rainfall over the weekend in Portland, OR, caused the city's reservoirs to become extremely turbid, prompting the Portland Water Bureau to switch to its backup groundwater supply.

Rainfall in the Bull Run watershed was heavy and localized over the weekend. One rain gauge recorded 8 inches of rain. That, coupled with several inches of snowmelt, caused one of the city's two reservoirs to register its second highest water flows in recorded history.
