A new hydrostatic level measurement system is designed to be ready to use out of the box. All programming is done at the factory so users only need to supply AC power to the unit and place the sensor in water.

The new Level Mate III from Ametek PMT Products includes a stainless steel submersible hydrostatic sensor with cable and a fully calibrated microprocessor-controlled digital meter housed in a NEMA 4X enclosure. It comes with all of the necessary features and accessories for a complete level monitoring system.

Standard features include a two-line LED display with configurable function keys, engineering units, programmable 3A Form C relays, analog output, alternating pump control, and 32-point linearization programs. Installed desiccants are included for moisture control. Among the unit’s options are AC & DC, lightning and surge protection, additional relays, stainless steel support cable and choice of multiple sensors based on application requirements.

At the heart of the Level Mate III is Ametek’s hydrostatic pressure sensor connected to the enclosure via a waterproof, flexible cable. The piezoresistive technology within the transmitter indicates liquid level by continuously measuring hydrostatic pressure through the transmitter’s nose-mounted sensing element. The device operates in depths from 3 feet to 690 feet and at pressures up to 300 psi, depending on choice of sensor.

The customizable meter on the Level Mate III provides excitation voltage, displays data from the transmitter, and transmits an analog signal for remote recording, alarm or control functions. The independently programmable, two-line digital display gives local indication, while an isolated 4-20 mA analog output can interface with an ancillary display, recording or control devices. Two standard relays are provided for pump control or alarm activation with 0-100% deadband setting capability on each.

Hydrostatic pressure technology is among the oldest forms of level measurement technology and can be used for a wide range of applications from basic well-level measurement to sophisticated process tank level control. The simple design and rugged construction of the solid-state system requires virtually no maintenance.

All of the transmitter’s electronics are mounted in a submersible 316 stainless steel housing. The transmitter has a removable, non-clogging snub nose end and is available with a flush diaphragm or protective “shark cage” enclosure. A special cable support bracket is available that gives extra stability to the transmitter when used with longer lengths of cable or when used in an agitated liquid. The instrument is vented to the atmosphere through the surface end of the cable through a desiccant cartridge to keep moisture out.

Hydrostatic technology is able to measure hundreds of feet of water head pressure and is independent of tank obstructions. There also is no need for tank mapping or special compensation due to variously sized tanks and wells. In addition, the technology ignores foam buildup on the water’s surface that can cause measurement errors for other technologies.
