SAN JOSE, CA, Apr. 18, 2011 -- According to a new report from Global Industry Analysts, the global market for activated carbon is forecast to reach a market size of 2.3 million metric tons by the year 2017. One of the major factors, they said, is the anticipated increase in demand for activated carbon in the U.S. market, stimulated over the long term by more stringent environmental regulations.
End-use applications in areas of air purification, water treatment and medical/pharmaceutical are also expected to drive growth in the US and Asia-Pacific markets through 2017. In the future, the focus is expected to shift to developing markets, led by China, India, Latin America and the Middle East.
Stringent environmental standards for removal of mercury at coal and power-based plants will propel US leadership in sector. With MACT regulations becoming fully effective in 2014, GIA predicts a strong annual growth rate averaging 13% in the long term.
Other niche areas expected to create interest for activated carbon include carbon reactivation/recycling, carbon clothing for military personnel as protection against radiological, biological and chemical warfare, and ultraviolet light for removal of cryptosporidium and other pathogens in water.
