DWR releases draft EIR for North Delta project

SACRAMENTO, CA, Jan. 29, 2008 -- The Department of Water Resources (DWR) has released the Draft Environmental Impact Report (Draft EIR) for the North Delta Flood Control and Ecosystem Restoration Project.

This project will implement flood control improvements principally on and around Staten Island, Dead Horse Island, and McCormack-Williamson Tract in a manner that benefits aquatic and terrestrial habitats, species, and ecological processes.

Flood control improvements are needed to reduce damage to land uses, infrastructure, and the Bay-Delta ecosystem. Such damage results from overflows caused by insufficient channel capacities and catastrophic levee failures in the project study area.

Comment period: Jan. 28 - March 28, 2008

The Department of Water Resources operates and maintains the State Water Project, provides dam safety and flood control and inspection services, assists local water districts in water management and water conservation planning, and plans for future statewide water needs.
