LANXESS to cease production at ion exchange subsidiary

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS Corporation announced its wholly owned subsidiary LANXESS Sybron Chemicals Inc. will discontinue production of ion exchange resins and related products, effective May 2, 2008, at its facility in Birmingham, NJ. This will affect approximately 90 jobs. BIRMINGHAM, NJ, Jan. 16, 2008 -- Specialty chemicals company LANXESS Corporation announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary LANXESS Sybron Chemicals Inc. will discontinue production of ion exchange resins and related products, effective May 2, 2008, at its facility in Birmingham, New Jersey. This will affect approximately 90 jobs.

"This was not an easy decision but it was economically necessary," stated LANXESS Sybron President Markus Linke. "The Birmingham production site is unable to compete in the changing ion exchange industry. We are grateful for the service our employees in Birmingham have provided, and we will help the affected employees through this period of transition."

With LANXESS' existing world-class ion exchange production sites in Leverkusen and Bitterfeld, Germany and its planned state-of-the-art facility in Gujarat, India, the Company is confident that it can continue to meet its customers' ion exchange needs. "We are committed to the ion exchange industry and are taking the necessary steps to help strengthen our business for the future," commented Dr. Michael Zobel, Managing Director of LANXESS' Ion Exchange Resins business unit.

The LANXESS Sybron facility in Birmingham, New Jersey will continue to serve NAFTA customers as a sales, technical service, laboratory, and warehousing facility for the LEWATIT® and IONAC® ion exchange resins.
