SINGAPORE, June 24, 2014 – Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) , has marked a major environmental milestone with the reduction of annual water consumption by more than 12 million gallons per year across its Singapore operations -- the equivalent of more than a half a million 10-minute showers.
Pledging to make every drop count, Pratt & Whitney identified several areas to reduce water usage across its Singapore operations. By implementing effective water conservation practices, the company made significant improvements and has achieved a reduction of 40 percent in water consumption since 2000.
Pratt & Whitney adopted a number of initiatives in Singapore to promote water conservation across its operations in line with its global 2025 goal to reduce water consumption by 80 percent from the 2000 baseline of 33 million gallons per year. These initiatives include closed-looping of wastewater processes, low-flow faucets and fixtures, rainwater harvesting, cooling tower management, and filtration systems.
Pratt & Whitney also recently marked another major environmental milestone with the adoption of the Lorong Halus Wetland, a former landfill turned eco-friendly sanctuary along the Serangoon Reservoir located to the northeast of Singapore, which will serve as a research and educational platform to increase environmental awareness among employees and community partners.
As part of the adoption and PUB's "Friends of Water" program, Pratt & Whitney plans to work with PUB, Singapore's national water agency to study and understand the wetland's environment with the aim of finding ways to enhance the cleansing of the water naturally in the long run. Employees will also learn and volunteer as green educational trail guides to help raise environmental awareness among the community.
