SACRAMENTO, CA, Oct. 31, 2007 -- Department of Water Resources (DWR) inspections indicate no damage to State Water Project facilities or levees following a magnitude 5.6 earthquake along the Calaveras Fault on Oct. 30. DWR followed standard inspection procedures after the quake occurred shortly after 8 p.m.
South Bay facilities, North Bay facilities, San Luis Dam, O'Neill Dam, Los Banos Detention Dam, Gianelli Pumping/Generating Plant, Dos Amigos Pumping Plant, and the main State Water Project canal from Clifton Court to milepost 91 were inspected.
Inspections at San Luis Field Division were completed shortly after midnight and at Delta Field Division shortly after 1 a.m. Daylight inspections commenced Oct. 31 and were expected to be completed later in the day.
State Water Project facilities requiring inspection are determined by the magnitude of an earthquake and the distance of the given facility from the epicenter.
The quake's epicenter was a considerable distance from flood control levees and no problems are anticipated, but precautionary surveys will continue throughout the day.
Particular inspection attention was given to Delta levees, and inspections are continuing today. In addition to DWR inspectors, Reclamation District engineers are continuing to inspect Delta levees
The Department of Water Resources operates and maintains the State Water Project, provides dam safety and flood control and inspection services, assists local water districts in water management and water conservation planning, and plans for future statewide water needs.
