March 31, 2004 -- Nine of the world's leading economists - including four Nobel Prize winners - are meeting in Denmark from 24-28 May 2004 to prioritise solutions to ten of the most important challenges facing the world, one of which is sanitation and water.

The economists will base their judgements on ten economic papers, each accompanied by a critical commentary from two opponents, which have been commissioned for the Copenhagen Consensus. Each paper contains 3-5 opportunities.

The paper on sanitation and water is being written by Prof. W. Michael Hanemann of the University of California, Berkeley, together with Prof. Dale Whittington the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Their two opponents have yet to be appointed.

Denmark's Environmental Assessment Institute, organiser of the Copenhagen Consensus 2004, hopes the event can be held every four years to tackle new emerging challenges.
