SYRACUSE, NY, & WESTFORD, MA, Sept. 23, 2004 (PRNewswire) -- ENSR International has been awarded $1 million in industrial and government Brownfield project contracts in upstate New York. Brownfield sites are abandoned, contaminated properties that threaten the health and vitality of local communities because environmental issues and liabilities deter potential developers.

Joe Campisi, ENSR's NY General Manager, said, "New York's Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has alternative requirements for property owners who voluntarily clean-up sites -- allowing for more flexible, streamlined and cost-effective site redevelopment."

Under these awards, ENSR will provide environmental consulting and engineering services from their New York State Offices (Albany, Syracuse, Rochester) in support of Brownfield clean up and redevelopment in several counties, cities and industries. The most prominent projects, including key waterfront areas, are located in Niagara Falls, Penn Yan, Oswego, Amsterdam, Syracuse and Rochester where abandoned industrial and commercial sites have impacted local economies. For these Brownfields projects, ENSR has begun to inventory and assess site properties, and conduct environmental site investigations in advance of building clean up, and soil and groundwater remediation.

Over the past two years, both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and NYSDEC have provided new and enhanced incentives for both private owners and municipalities to revitalize Brownfields. EPA estimates $100 million will be available for 200 Brownfield grant awards. The state's Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act authorizes $200 million for Brownfields Environmental Restoration Projects, and additional tax incentives for redevelopment of in the state's most impoverished areas.

Founded in 1968, ENSR International (www.ensr.com) provides comprehensive environmental services from 45 US/70 offices worldwide. ENSR's remediation scientists and engineers have performed thousands of environmental site cleanups for industrial companies and public entities under a broad range of environmental regulatory standards. ENSR is an Environmental Business Journal Award winner in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
