Arcadis scientists publish guide for groundwater contamination treatment

DENVER, Dec. 21, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Two of Arcadis' predominant scientists, Dr. Suthan Suthersan, P.E., and Dr. Fred Payne, co-authored and published "In Situ Remediation Engineering," the next generation book in the science and application of in-situ environmental remediation.

"In Situ Remediation Engineering" is the first literary collaboration by Drs. Suthersan and Payne. Adding to an already impressive list of published material by both Dr. Suthersan and Dr. Payne, "In Situ" outlines and provides an accurate guide for environmental engineers and scientists to deploy cost-effective remedial strategies. The book offers extensive coverage of remedial system operation, including the design and implementation of reactive zone methods for treatment of all major classes of groundwater contamination.

"Our latest collaboration is unique in that it provides a detailed study of the chemical and biological treatment mechanisms of in-situ treatment technologies, the patterns of contaminant distribution in aquifers and strategies for distributing reagents in the subsurface," said Payne, vice president with ARCADIS. "Most importantly, we were able to draw from ARCADIS' worldwide base of experience in chemical and biological treatment processes," added Payne.

In-situ remediation methods are preferable to traditional remedial approaches because they can be applied at a lower cost, while improving predictability and shortening the time required to achieve cleanup objectives.

According to Dr. Suthersan, the text emphasizes the future direction for the successful implementation of in-situ remediation projects. In addition, the book also deals with both innovative and experimental treatment technologies for emerging contaminants such as radionuclides, explosives, pharmaceutical compounds, perchlorate, chlorophenols and solvent stabilizers.

Dr. Suthersan is also the author of "Remediation Engineering: Design Concepts and Natural and Enhanced Remediation Systems" and the founding editor of "The Journal of Strategic Environmental Management."
