Desalinate More Water with Less Waste

Dec. 12, 2019
ANDRITZ has tailored decanter centrifuges for brine dewatering, resulting in the right sludge dryness for safe and cost-efficient disposal of waste sludge, and a wide range of highly energy-efficient pumps for use in desalination plants.

Billions of people worldwide live on coastlines, often depending on desalination of seawater as their source of potable water. But desalination also generates brine — highly concentrated saltwater left over from the process, which poses a threat to the environment. Global technology group ANDRITZ has tailored decanter centrifuges for brine dewatering, resulting in the right sludge dryness for safe and cost-efficient disposal of waste sludge, and a wide range of highly energy-efficient pumps to cover a large number of the processes in a desalination plant and ensure they are environmentally friendly.

Sustainable Water Supply Around the World

A highly sustainable solution for brine disposal is to enhance diffusion by using a pipe with nozzle diffusers as well as a brine discharge pump to provide sufficient pressure. Another solution is to dewater it with centrifuges to obtain the right sludge dryness for safe and cost-efficient disposal. ANDRITZ offers all these solutions.

In fact, many desalination plants around the world are already using or planning to use ANDRITZ technologies in their processes. In Chile, 11 ANDRITZ pumps ranging from vertical line shaft pumps to single-stage centrifugal and double-suction split case pumps for different water transport tasks throughout the process will soon be pumping desalinated water through five booster stations over an altitude of 4,000 meters and two ANDRITZ decanter centrifuges D4LL will make sure the brine is suitable for disposal. In Oman, two highly efficient ANDRITZ decanter centrifuges are also being used for brine treatment. Capable of ensuring high throughput and dryness requirements, this solution guarantees cost-efficient, continuous operation with minimal sludge mass for safe disposal.

Energy-Efficient Equipment for Less Power Wasted

Thermal desalination usually wastes a large amount of energy. This is why ANDRITZ offers one of the industry’s most energy-efficient portfolios for desalination. ANDRITZ pumps, in particular, are known for their excellent efficiencies beyond 90 percent and thus operate well above the industrial average. Also the energy consumption of ANDRITZ decanter centrifuges has been optimized, resulting in up to 40 percent less electricity consumption (depending on application).

Increased Lifetime and Higher Performance

To further cut both costs and waste, long-lasting machines are a major benefit. Crucial parts of ANDRITZ decanters and pumps for desalination are manufactured in duplex and super duplex stainless steel for maximum corrosion resistance. The striking features of this material are its high resistance to surface, localized, and stress corrosion cracking, securing a long lifetime even when in constant contact with high salinity.

To make sure your equipment keeps on running, the ANDRITZ service team is always ready to lend a helping hand — anywhere in the world. When it comes to process control, the Metris addIQ control systems from ANDRITZ combine all our extensive operation, troubleshooting, and start-up experience in one tailored automation solution. The broad portfolio of scalable automation solutions, applicable for a wide range of purposes (e.g., predictive maintenance, process monitoring, troubleshooting, long-term trending), helps to reduce risks, increase availability, and thus improve the ecological footprint as well as the long-term success of the project.
