WASHINGTON, DC, Oct. 31, 2005 -- Calgon Carbon Corp. announced today at the annual WEFTEC Technical Exhibition and Conference that its UV Technologies Division has been selected to supply Sentinel® UV Disinfection Systems for the Washington (D.C.) Suburban Sanitary Commission's (WWSC) Potomac Water Filtration Plant. When installed, it will become the largest ultraviolet system for disinfection of drinking water in the United States, treating up to 300 million gallons of drinking water per day.

The Potomac Water Filtration Plant (WFP) serves over 1.6 million people in Montgomery and Prince Georges counties in Maryland. The WSSC will install Calgon Carbon's Sentinel UV Disinfection Systems as part of major improvements to the Potomac WFP to meet future water demands and to increase protection against surface water pathogens.

A total of twelve (12) Sentinel 48 UV reactors will be installed beginning in 2007. The Sentinel 48 is the largest UV reactor in the industry, capable of treating up to 40 million gallons of water per day per reactor. The Sentinel 48 has been third-party validated in accordance with the EPA's UV Disinfection Guidance Manual draft. Calgon Carbon's rigorous validation process supports WWSC's goal to provide safe drinking water to their customers and comply with current and pending EPA regulations for the control of Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and other waterborne organisms.

Commenting on this announcement, James Sullivan, general manager of Calgon Carbon's UV Technologies Division said, "We are pleased to have been selected to supply our Sentinel disinfection systems to WSSC. This award represents WSSC's confidence in Calgon Carbon's UV Technologies as well as the continued acceptance of UV disinfection by major drinking water providers throughout North America."

In addition, the company announced the launch of its new C3500™ UV wastewater disinfection system. The system is the latest addition to the C3Series™ UV wastewater disinfection product line. Utilizing powerful yet energy-efficient 500-watt lamps, the system is designed for high-flow municipal wastewater applications as well as challenging combined sewer overflow (CSO), sanitary sewer overflow (SSO), and reuse applications. The low-pressure, high-output proprietary lamp design is the industry's most powerful and represents the company's continued commitment to innovation in UV product development.

Sullivan said, "With the success of the C3150, launched last year, we are very excited to be expanding our wastewater product offering for large flows and reuse applications with the C3500. This launch represents the completion of our product line for the global municipal wastewater market and is consistent with our strategic growth initiatives."

Calgon Carbon Corp. (www.calgoncarbon.com), with headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pa., is a global leader in services and solutions for making air and water cleaner and safer. The company employs approximately 1,100 people at 16 operating facilities and 27 sales and service centers worldwide.
