The Reynosa Municipal Water & Wastewater Utility (COMAPA) in Tamaulipas state became the first Mexican drinking water installation for New Mexico-based MIOX Corp., which manufactures mixed oxidant on-site generation treatment systems that use only water, salt and electricity to generate disinfectant.
The state water authority is moving away from chlorine gas and has standardized MIOX for municipal water disinfection needs. Several other Mexican cities are in the pilot plant stage, preparing for future installations that benefit from no hazardous chemicals transportation, storage or handling risks. In other news, MIOX RIO systems are treating water for Latin America’s largest bottler Coca-Cola FEMSA. MIOX also joined forces with the FEMSA Foundation in November to provide clean drinking water to Tabasco during floods that shut down most of the state. More opportunities in Colombia are anticipated as MIOX’s newly established Colombian office, the foundation and Colombian Vice Ministry of Water & Sanitation spearhead a program to bring safe drinking water to 100,000 residents in rural communities.
McIlvaine: Treatment chemicals, pumps, ultra-pure water forecasts up
The McIlvaine Company is forecasting worldwide water and wastewater chemical sales will reach $24.7 billion in 2012, led by corrosion inhibitors, organic and inorganic flocculants, scale inhibitors, oxidizers and biocides, and pH and odor control.
Based on 2008 revenues of $20.5 billion, world sales are expected to grow an average of 5% annually into the next decade, with Asia seeing the greatest growth. In other news, McIlvaine predicts industrial pump sales in Asia will reach $15.4 billion in 2012, up 32% in the next four years. Likewise, the Asian market for ultra-pure water systems, membranes and resins is expected to grow to $3.5 billion or by 46% over the same period.
New report examines world demand for activated carbon
According to a new study from The Freedonia Group Inc., world demand for virgin activated carbon is forecast to expand 5.2% a year through 2012 to 1.15 million metric tons. The USA, China and Japan will continue to account for almost half of global demand in 2012, although China will expand its market share from 15% to 18%.
In other news, Freedonia predicts world filter demand will climb 5.6% annually through 2011 to $49 billion.

USA/CANADA: CH2M Hill signed two contracts with Fort Hills Energy L.P. in a joint venture with Lockerbie & Hole Construction Management Inc. to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for the Infrastructure Utilities Work for the Fort Hills Oil Sands Project. It will serve as managing partner of the $500 million contracts, which allow for continuation of front-end engineering design and early site work on the Fort Hills Mine site.
USA/CANADA: Aquatech International Corp. was awarded a large water treatment contract earlier this year for a cogeneration facility in Ontario that includes self-cleaning filters, two 575-pm ultrafiltration units, two 460-gpm RO units, two mixed-bed demineralization units and two 400-gpm condensate multi-media filters. It’s set for delivery later this year.
USA/CANADA: Basin Water Inc. signed an agreement with Water & Earth Science Associates Ltd. (WESA), of Toronto, to provide process design and equipment for mining water treatment at a site in northeastern Ontario. This represents Basin Water’s first large order in the industrial market following acquisition and integration of Mobile Process Technologies, Co. last year.
USA: Dow Water Solutions will spend $88 million to expand production of RO and nanofiltration membranes at its Edina, Minnesota, USA, operation by more than 11 times to 630,000 sq. ft. In a deal with Veolia unit OTV, it also will supply RO membranes to Sydney, Australia’s wind-powered desalination plant.
