JEFFERSON CITY, MO, Apr. 26, 2011 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded the city of Macon a $1.3 million low-interest loan to improve wastewater disinfection facilities at its existing treatment plant.

The city will use the funds to construct and install an ultraviolet disinfection system and a canopy or building to house the disinfection components at the treatment facility site. The improvements will also include installing a generator and automatic transfer switch to allow continuous disinfection during power outages.

"It is imperative that our wastewater systems continue maintain and update its facilities to protect Missouri's water quality and this loan will help the district do just that," Gov. Jay Nixon said.

The project is estimated to cost $1.3 million and is expected to be completed in February of 2012. Funding for the loan comes from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund. The fund is a joint effort between the department and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide cost effective financing for clean water infrastructure improvements. The Department of Natural Resources' Water Protection Program will administer the loan funds.

"The department is committed to working closely with communities to assist with funding efforts that support water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects as well as provide a financial savings," said Sara Parker Pauley, Director of the Department of Natural Resources.
