CHARLOTTE, NC, Dec. 14, 2004 -- ITT Industries Inc., a WEDECO unit, has been selected to supply the UV disinfection system for the Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Plant, located in the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) of British Columbia, Canada.

The Greater Vancouver Water District is operated by the GVRD, which is a partnership of municipalities that make up the metropolitan area of Greater Vancouver, which serves a population of about 2 million people. Up to 70% of the drinking water for Greater Vancouver comes from the Seymour and Capilano watersheds, located in the North Shore Mountains. Due to high levels of turbidity not meeting federal guidelines and inadequate primary disinfection of the water source, a new filtration plant is scheduled to open in 2007 near Rice Lake, about seven miles (11 kilometers) from the Seymour reservoir.

Following filtration, primary disinfection is required as a safeguard to inactivate any harmful micro-organisms still present in the water. The new plant will use ultraviolet light as a primary disinfectant. The UV disinfection process is more efficient against harmful pathogens, decreases the overall chemical use in drinking water and provides a much smaller foot print than using chlorine. Sodium Hypochlorite will be used as a secondary disinfectant to further protect the drinking water as it travels through the distribution process.

Twenty-three individual UV units have been ordered for installation in the filter pipe gallery, each rated for a maximum flow of 24.84 Million Gallons per Day (MGD), and a total flow capacity of 571 MGD. One additional system may be added at a future date. SSBV Consultants, Inc. of Vancouver, a company jointly owned by Black & Veatch Corporation, Stantec, and AMEC, were the consulting engineers who developed the design and bid documents for the filtration plant. The bid process for selecting the UV system included a life cycle cost evaluation in which the initial capital cost of the UV equipment was combined with the present value of site-specific operation and maintenance costs over the 20 year projected life. Mequipco Ltd. was the Western Canadian Representative that was instrumental in providing the proper strategic positioning, which led to the selection of WEDECO for this UV system.

"This order is yet another example of ITT Industries possibilities to better serve its customers with total solutions," said Tom Pokorsky, President of the Advanced Water Treatment business of ITT Industries. "We offer customers advanced disinfection technologies, which are safe and efficient. These UV units require 3-4 times less energy to deliver the same disinfection capacity into the same water flow as competing systems."

With North American operations based in Charlotte, N.C., WEDECO (www.wedeco.us), a recent acquisition of ITT Industries Inc., is the world's leading manufacturer of ultraviolet water disinfection and ozone oxidation systems. Highly efficient UV systems provide chemical-free disinfection solutions to a variety of markets including municipal drinking water, wastewater, industrial process applications and consumer/residential water treatment. WEDECO's leading ozone oxidation systems are used in a wide range of industrial and municipal applications. Ozone oxidizes harmful contaminants in industrial wastewater and eliminates color, taste and odor in drinking water. Ozone is also used as an alternative to chlorine bleaching in the pulp and paper industry.

ITT Industries Inc. (www.itt.com) supplies advanced technology products and services in key markets such as: fluid and water management, including water treatment; defense communication; opto-electronics; information technology and services; electronic interconnects and switches; and other specialty products. Based in White Plains, N.Y., the company generated $5.63 billion in 2003 sales.
