Control Total Organic Carbon and Trihalomethane Formation

May 2, 2019
A comprehensive plan to reduce THM formation starts with the effective removal and monitoring of total organic carbon in the water treatment plant, which requires an accurate means to verify TOC levels in both the raw water and finished water.

A comprehensive plan to reduce or prevent trihalomethane (THM) and haloacetic acid (HAA) formation starts with the effective removal and monitoring of total organic carbon (TOC) in the water treatment plant. To do that requires an accurate means of verifying TOC levels in both the raw and finished water before delivery to the distribution system, as TOC is a precursor to THM/HAA formation.

Metro Water Services (MWS) in Nashville, Tenn., operates two plants, K. R. Harrington (90 MGD) and Omohundro (90 MGD), which provide the drinking water supply to the City of Nashville and Davidson County.

Model 9210p On-Line TOC analyzer.

A full understanding of THM/HAA formation required a complete mapping of plant production and the distribution system. But first, the TOC levels in the raw water and finished water from the plants would need to be known and controlled to a consistent level.

MWS employed OI Analytical’s Model 9210p on-line TOC analyzer for monitoring of the raw water and finished water at the two plants. With this method, the TOC reduction target of greater than 50 percent can be accurately achieved, measured and monitored. The TOC data is critical for establishing carbon dosing levels in the raw water to produce finished water with minimal amounts of TOC.

MWS plant operators are very pleased with the performance and durability of OI Analytical analyzers, which are still going strong after 5 years. WW
