Scottish Water to use PWNT's product for new plant

The plant producing 4 MLD will utilize PWNT’s ILCA and CeraMac technologies, and will be operational in December 2022.

The water services company Scottish Water has selected PWNT’s products for its new-build water treatment plant at Peebles, Scotland. The new plant will become operational in December 2022 and will replace an existing installation dating from 1970.

PWNT is an international technology developer for water services. Scottish Water selected PWNT’s CeraMac filtration and Inline Coagulation and Adsorption (ILCA) technologies for its Bonnycraig, Peebles location. The decision to use PWNT’s products for the plant came after a series of successful product pilots in Invercannie (2017), Turriff (2018), and Marchbank/Bonnycraig (2019/20) in line with two key principles: sustainability and minimal landscape impact.

Consisting of four C-19 CeraMac vessels and four ILCA 270 vessels, the plant using feedwater from Megget Reservoir is expected to produce 4 MLD and shall be constructed relying on the Transportable Treatment Units developed by Ross Shire Engineering (RSE). RSE’s modular units, complete with PWNT equipment, will be fabricated and assembled in RSE’s Muir of Ord workshops, prior to being transferred to site at Bonnycraig, Peebles. Transporting the completed unit direct to site will overall reduce the MEICA and civil construction impact on the local community and wider environment.

Stewart Sutherland, Membrane Treatment Specialist at Scottish Water, said, “Having tested multiple systems based on key parameters including long-term reliability, we’re pleased to have chosen PWNT’s technologies given their successful implementation in other municipal plants worldwide. Using technology that can ensure the reliable flow of clean drinking water in an effective, robust and sustainable way is certainly beneficial to our constituents.”

Allan Dallas, Managing Director of RSE, said, “RSE has worked collaboratively with PWNT over the past two years to design a Transportable Treatment Unit (TTU) with integrated CeraMac filtration and In-line Coagulation and Adsorption technologies. Incorporating PWNT’s standard offering into RSE’s modular TTU system has facilitated a fully off-site fabricated and tested unit, devised for Scottish Water. We look forward to delivering the next phase of the project in conjunction with PWNT and providing Peebles with a high quality and reliable water supply for years to come.“
